Welcome to 34thparallel.com

Our mission

Welcome to 34th Parallel, where our mission is to bring the small family winemaker back to prominence in an industry currently dominated by multi-national corporations. The members of 34th Parallel are committed to introducing high quality, small volume wines to our customers.  It is our goal to team with independent producers from around the world, to distribute their wines to new markets, and to share those wines with connoisseurs and neophytes alike.

Our Story

34th Parallel is a partnership between Jeff Shaeffer and Kym Jenke.  Kym’s wine making experience and his history of hosting interns from around the globe, have led to an extensive network of friends and business contacts amongst the international winemaker community.  Jeff’s background in sales and the relationships he has fostered in the US wine industry, have led to a network of friends and business contacts throughout the US.  It seems a natural fit that these two would bring their networks together to help independent producers from around the globe introduce their wines to the US market.

Our Wineries

Jenke Vineyards is the first of what we hope to be many producers that share our vision.  Jenke Vineyards is the culmination of six generations of Jenkes who have grown grapes in the Barossa Valley. Kym Jenke started the winery in 1989, in his neighbor’s shed.  The current winery is situated on the estate property, right next to the original home of his ancestors (now Jenke Vineyards tasting room).

Our Partners

We have many partners that work tireless hours in order to bring our wines to you, the people.  The levels of involvement vary from the vigneron, to the winemaker, from the cellar mascot, to the cellar “rat”, from the cooper to the bottler, from the freight handler to the customs agent.  This section will give you a glimpse of our partners in action.

Our first Press in the US!

ImageThere are few who doubt the impact of press in our modern society.  Good publicity can make or break a career, be it in politics, in business, and, of course, in Hollywood.  This certainly holds true when it comes to selling wine as well.  Publications like Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, and Wine Enthusiast among others, can make or break a brand with their reviews.  This can be intimidating for a small producer, as their "fate" may be placed in the hands of an editorial staff, which tastes thousands of wine each year.

It is our belief that wine is purely subjective and should be based upon a person's own palate and tastes.  This is not to say that we do not value the reviews that the experts offer.  We most certainly do, as we send our wines in for review as well.  We also point towards such publications as a resource, as a means of discovery, in order to learn about new wines being introduced to the market.  These folks are professional wine critics and their opinions do count.   In fact, please find a short list below of how some of these critics have rated our Jenke Vineyards wines:

  • ’06 J.V. Chardonnay 89 pts. Wine Enthusiast – April ’08 issue
  • ’05 J.V. Merlot  90 pts. James Halliday – 2008 Buying Guide
  • ’06 J.V. Shiraz 91 pts. Editors' Choice Wine Enthusiast - August '08 issue
  • ’05 J.V. Cabernet Franc 90 pts. James Halliday – 2008 Buying Guide
  • ’02 J.V. Cabernet Sauvignon 91 pts. Editors' Choice Wine Enthusiast – Feb. ’08 issue
  • ’02 J.V. Reserve Shiraz  94 pts. James Halliday – 2008 Buying Guide

Featured Winemaker

Image

Our featured winemaker is Kym Jenke of Jenke Vineyards.  Kym began his career as a winemaker after graduating from Roseworthy College with his degree in Enology.  After earning his degree in 1987 he worked in California's Napa Valley for Demoor Winery and then returned home to work for Kies Estates in Lyndoch (Barossa Valley, South Australia).  He started his own label in 1989, and in paying tribute to the five generations of grapegrowers before him, he chose to produce his wines bearing his family’s name.

Kym has won many awards for his Jenke Vineyards wines over the past 20 years, including the Barossa Wine Grape Council Trophy for the Best Small Producer (1994) and his most recent award, the Hiatt-Advertiser Wine of  the Year (’02 Semillon) for the state of South Australia (2006 & 2007 consecutively).
